OCTOBER 27, 2009

It's a cold and rainy Tuesday, so it must be time for another Skip Crackle Pop. I used to beat myself up over low turnouts, but now I embrace it. I accept that SCP will probably never attract more than a dozen people on any given night, but I'm okay with that. It takes the pressure off and I can be more loose to dance like a fool and zing one-liners at the crowd. Tonight was one of my favorite SCP events because the room was packed with the most attentive and energetic strangers that I've seen. They picked the right day at the right time to be working on a laptop at Kavarna. In fact, a man named Ed introduced himself to me and said that he would attend the next SCP with a record in hand. I'm also proud that nobody left until after the last song of the night, so that's quite an accomplishment.

In other news, Kavarna's newest server (I already forgot her name) was very hospitable and loads of fun. Halloween-themed tracks a-plenty! We learned that Cat and a woman at the bar prefer Ghostbusters II to the first Ghostbusters. I'm not saying that they're wrong; just that they're in the minority. And SCP's original deejay, Rene, made a special appearance with a stack of wild card albums that did not disappoint.

The set list can be found below, and photos from this meeting can be found here.

Tom Courtenay
I met James McNew of Yo La Tengo and told him that I was going to play one of their 7 "s at Skip Crackle Pop. This is the story he told me about the Tom Courtenay single:
The back of the sleeve is a picture of me during the Elecr-o-Pura recording session. We recorded in a house that I lived in for three weeks. This particular room with the organ was the bathroom, so when we went to the bathroom we had to work our way around the organ and cables and stuff.
